Design Challenge

Engineering Ornament into Everyday Use

CRMM designed the islands as complete architectural furnishings, balancing substantial three-inch walnut worktops with intricately carved cabinetry below. The acanthus-leaf corbels were machined on a five-axis CNC, then refined and finished by hand so the ornament felt integral rather than applied.

Material Resolution

Walnut, Carved Detail, and a Blue-Gray Finish

Solid black walnut gives the work surfaces their visual weight, while the blue-gray painted cabinetry keeps the composition from becoming too heavy. Leftover walnut from the tops was reused to make a fitted cutlery tray, carrying the same material into the smallest functional detail.
