Understanding the Difference Between 3-Axis and 5-Axis CNC Machining in Fine Woodworking
At Cache River Mill & MetalWorks, precision and craftsmanship come together through advanced technology. One of the biggest factors that determines the complexity and speed of a custom millwork project is the type of CNC machining used—specifically, whether it’s 3-axis or 5-axis.
3-Axis CNC Machining
- Great for: cabinet parts, low relief carvings, panels, curved mouldings
- Limitations: 3-dimensional motifs, some organic shapes like stair rail parts
In 3-axis machining, the cutting tool moves along three linear axes—X, Y, and Z. This method is ideal for straightforward milling, drilling, and contouring operations. It’s efficient for producing flat surfaces, shallow reliefs, and parts where all details can be accessed from a single direction.
For woodworking, 3-axis machining offers accuracy and repeatability on everything from mouldings and panel work to custom cabinetry components. It’s the workhorse for high-volume, consistent production. In our shop, the 3-axis machine is the machine you’ll hear and see running almost every single day.
5-Axis CNC Machining
- Great for: high detail, sculptural carving, complex geometry, and stair parts
- Limitations: Additional axes require more complex programming and setup time.
5-axis machining takes precision to the next level by adding two rotational axes—allowing the tool or workpiece to tilt and rotate. This expanded motion enables complex geometries, deep undercuts, and seamless multi-face machining without repositioning the part.
Our 5-axis CNC machine allows us to get very detailed when it comes to woodworking. Our programmers have the experience to create your project in a virtual, 3D world, and then program our CNC machine to replicate each part of your design. The below picture shows a mahogany retail sign that we did for our friends at Natural Gear Camouflage. Our team was able to replicate their logo in our software program, and then program the CNC machine to make all of the necessary paths that brought the Natural Gear logo to life!

Many of the pieces that are used in the assembly of this chair are not only curved in various directions, but they also have detailed carvings
placed along those curves. There are a total of twenty two pieces that
make up our duck chair, and, with our CNC programming and machining, we can ensure that each one of those pieces comes out the exact same, over and over again. Repeatable pieces also allow for many variations of this chair with different design features.
